Error code 80240020 occurs when you download an incomplete Windows 10 files and trying to upgrade the Windows 10 with these files moreover it can happen if you have an unfinished or corrupted Windows 10 installation folder.

Fortunately solution to this problem is quite easy. You just need to follow the steps below to get your problem fixed.

Step 1: In your drive C: find $Windows.~BT folder. In case you didn’t find it make sure you have access to your hidden items too and then check again.

Step 2: In this folder delete all files if you cannot delete some of the files it can be because of permission issues,again go back to drive C: and in Windows folder click on the SoftwareDistribution folder and then click on the Download folder and delete all the items in this folder keep in mind you don’t need to delete download folder just delete its content completely.

Step 3: Go to the search bar and type cmd.exe and then right click the option cmd and select Run as administrator.

Step 4: In the next prompt window click on the Yes button.

Warning: Before you are doing step 5 make sure you have a backup of your registry in case of any error happen.

Step 5: In cmd window type wuauclt.exe/updatenow and press the Enter key.

Now press Window+R key and open the run window and type

regedit in run and hit Enter and here again select yes for administrator permission in prompted window.

Step 6: Now follow the path:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade

Step 7: On the right side of the pane, right click on the empty space and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Step 8: Rename the value to AllowOSUpgrade. Then double click on the value and set the value data to 1. Then click OK to save the change.

After these steps your Windows Update panel should appear in a few seconds. If it does not open automatically, you can open this panel manually from the Control Panel. After that, you should be able to download your Windows 10 from scratch.

The above steps also work if you experience error code 80080080 or 8024600A. The error is usually common with Windows 8.1 users, but for those using Windows 7, this solution also applies.

If the problem is still there, don’t worry, Windows Update takes time to download updates in the background. If you still can’t fix this problem, the Windows Update tool may be corrupted, so your security settings and background process are no longer working properly.
